Roman gladiators

I’ve finished painting up some gladiators and a lion to go with my amphitheatre ! All figures are by Foundry. The sculpting and casting of these metal figures are of a very high standard, but sadly my order was missing a spear. Fortunately I still had the plastic Fireforge Games weapon sprue from customising my Uruk-hai crossbowmen , so replacing it was simple enough. Slightly more annoying was that two of the figures didn’t come with rectangular scuta as shown on the Foundry website. Instead, they have these weird, stylised figure-of-eight type shields that I associate more with bronze age Greece than with Rome. I’m a little annoyed that I didn’t realise this when my order arrived. It’s been over six months now, so it feels a little late to contact Foundry about it. In any case, I’m still really pleased with the end result. Each figure has its own colour scheme and listing all colours feels a bit excessive. I'm not sure if it comes across, but I’ve used three different skin co...

Isengard army pt. 1: Saruman, Lurtz, Uglúk and Uruk-hai

Up next in my ongoing LoTR series is the start of a small Isengard army. So far I’ve stripped and repainted Saruman, Lurtz, Uglúk (all in metal) and 15 plastic Uruk-hai (10x with sword and shield, 5x with crossbows). I have another 12 Uruks to go, as well as 24 Mordor Orcs. And I’m also thinking of adding a Troll... or perhaps two? The official metal Uruk-hai warriors with crossbows are ludicrously expensive. At the time of writing they are listed on the GW website for € 22,50 for a pack of four figures! Several people online have had good results converting pike-wielding Uruk-hai into crossbowmen using the Fireforge weapon sprue. I decided to go the same route and the end result is okay I think. They don’t look quite as good as the metal figures, but they will do. The painting process was pretty simple: Saruman Robes: Bone White 72.034. Then oil wash Quickshade Light Tone. After min. 24 hours highlight with Bone White 72.034 followed by White 70.951.   Skin: Vallejo Basi...
