Wings of War is a fun, easy to get into table top game made by Nexus dedicated to aerial combat. There are both World War I and World War II systems available with slight differences in the rules and game mechanics. Wings of War can be played using cards for the aircraft, but there are models available (scale 1:200?). Update: apparently the game is now produced by Ares and has been renamed Wings of Glory.
I decided to make some scenery to decorate my battle mat. I cut some bases out of a sheet of polystyrene using a simple fretsaw and glued on bits of cardboard and match sticks for the buildings. Texture was applied in the appropriate areas by gluing on used coffee grounds and everything was then painted using acrylics. Details were drawn on using a waterproof pen.
As the bases of the airplane models need to be able to stand on top of the scenery, the pieces were kept as flat as possible. The polystyrene sheet is 3 mm thick and the buildings are another 3 mm thick at most. I could've simply painted the buildings onto the polystyrene, but making them out of cardboard gives them just a bit more depth. By the way, the scale of the buildings bears no relation to the planes whatsoever. I figured that in most cases the aircraft would be flying at some height, so the buildings would look much smaller anyway.
