I made some progress on the diorama today. I’ve added a cobblestone path to the base and made a roof for the building. I knew how to make a fairly convincing looking slate roof, but that didn’t feel appropriate. Making little roof tiles seemed like a lot of work, so I went for a thatched roof instead.
I came across these two very useful tutorials on making thatched roofs over at Tiny Hordes and Charlie Foxtrot Models. It really couldn’t be any simpler. You just take a regular bath towel and cut it into roughly 2 cm wide strips. You then glue these strips to your roof, starting from the bottom and letting them overlap slightly. Make sure that the loops of the towel are pointing down. When you reach the top, you add a final extra wide strip that folds over the top ridge of the roof. You can then coat the towel with watered down PVA glue, or simply apply a thick coat of primer used for painting wood.
I think I’m almost ready for painting now!
