Japanese house and chicken coop, part 1

Time for another cheap and cheerful scenery project, a farm/house to go with my Japanese shrine. I again started by stealing ideas looking for inspiration on the internet and making a quick design in Adobe Illustrator. I then printed out the design as a template for cutting out the cardboard. I always use non-corrugated cardboard for the visible sides, because with the corrugated kind the grooves tend to show through after painting.

Three of the four walls are done. I’ve also made the front and back of a little chicken coop. Chicken coop, I hear you thinking, does that mean that there will be cute miniature chickens? Oh yes!

The walls were then glued to a sheet of polystyrene. As you can see, I messed up the angles of the hip roof. The mistake was easily fixed, however, by gluing a bit of card over the hole.

After gluing on strips of bath towel for the thatched roof, the house and chicken coop are ready for painting.
