A while ago I bought the starter set for GaleForce Nine’s game Tanks, a skirmish game that uses these tiny 1:100 scale tanks. The starter set comes with three models (a Panther and two Shermans) and over the last few months I have slowly been adding a couple more. I didn’t document the building and painting of these little tanks, but I can at least show the finished product.
I decided I wanted a German and a British force. To start with the German tanks - because I think they turned out the best - I painted three vehicles in the famous Hinterhalt Tarnung (ambush camouflage). From left to right (on the first picture) these are the Panther that came with the starter set, a Panzer IV Ausf. H made by Zvezda and a StuG III Ausf. G made by the Plastic Soldier Company. The decals are by Victrix and are meant for their 1:144 scale vehicles. I think they look pretty good on these 1:100 vehicles as well, though.
I also bought a Tiger tank and a StuG III Ausf. B, both from Zvezda. Both are early production models and as such were never painted in the Hinterhalt camouflage. I therefore went for this very interesting looking design used during the battle of Kursk. I stole the idea from Kit Noob, who did a much better job of it.
For the Brits I started with the two Sherman tanks that came with the starter set. They are actually American M4A3’s (Sherman IV’s in British parlance), which were never used by the British. You have the option of building them with the 75 mm or with the 76 mm gun. At this scale, though, I think they look close enough to British Sherman II’s as long as you use the older turret with the 75 mm gun. To these models I added a Sherman Vc Firefly with a 17pdr gun and a Cromwell, both by GaleForce Nine.
The decals are by Peddinghaus. A rivet counter will straight away notice that the markings are not entirely accurate for the vehicles. But again, at this scale I am not that bothered. The black wash is a bit heavy handed, which shows up really clearly in the pictures. On the table, though, they look pretty decent.
