After the finicky business of assembling the planes, making a base for them was pretty straightforward. I bought some 0.7 mm metal wire at my local DIY store. It comes in rolls of 50 m, so I think I’m pretty much set for life. Next up was making two tiny holes in the fuselages for the wire. Rather than trying to drill, I decided to melt the holes in. This was done by holding a bit of wire into a candle flame with a pair of pliers and then carefully pressing the hot wire against the plane. The holes were cleaned up with a hobby knife.
For the
base I used an MDF picture frame. I drilled two holes in it, fed a wire through
each and hot glued them in place. The entire base was then given a coat of white
wood primer.
After the base coat had dried I sketched a simple landscape of crop fields and meadows onto the base and then coloured this in with acrylic paints.
I also
started on painting the aircraft themselves. Here they are most of the way
done. Only a little bit of clean up to be done and then the decals can be
applied.
