Being a big fan of Batman and the 1990’s Batman The Animated Series (BTAS), I have a decent collection of Heroclix BTAS minis that I have not yet gotten around to using in a game. I’ve never been into the gridded, flat, terrainless boards that Heroclix is played on. But what if I were to replace the grid with a measured movement system and added some buildings and scatter pieces? Challenge accepted!
BTAS is set in a cool noir world that is a mix of 1940’s/50’s buildings and cars with modern technology. Starting with the buildings, there are several companies that sell MDF kits, the best known probably being Sarissa Precision and 4Ground. I, however, opted for the Dark City range from Multiverse. It being a Polish company and me living in the EU, this meant no unexpected post-Brexit shipping costs. I do also genuinely think that their buildings - particularly the four Brownstone Row buildings - are the best looking ones out there.
So after eying the Multiverse webstore for a couple of weeks I settled on Brownstone Row building 1b (shop with apartments on second floor), Brownstone Row building 1c (residential building), the Pawn shop, the Monarch Theatre (cinema) and a set of phone booths and fire hydrants. So far, I have completed Brownstone Row building 1c, the pawn shop and the phone booths and fire hydrants. Everything went together very easily and the buildings were a joy to paint. Man, does the smell of lasercut (i.e. burned) MDF linger, though!
One little nit to pick: the individual letters of the ‘pawn shop’ sign were so small that the laser cutter clearly had had some problems and some of the letters were completely burned through. I simply printed out a new sign on my black-and-white laser printer and used it as a guide to paint a new sign.
