Dark City terrain part 3

Gotham City’s Monarch Theatre has seen better days... I’m rounding off my dark city terrain with another MDF building from Multiverse , an art deco cinema! The kit comes with two laser-cut letter sheets, so you can choose your own movie title for the marquee. Given that the cinema is called the Monarch, I stuck with the default The Mark of Zorro (for non-Batman fans: in the comics Bruce Wayne’s parents were killed outside the Monarch Theatre when taking Bruce to see The Mark of Zorro. In Batman Begins they go the opera Die Fledermaus, but that seems a bit on the nose to me). If desired, I believe Multiverse also offer the option of laser-cutting a custom name sign.   I also bought some 1:35 scale street lights. Finding decently scaled street lights online was more difficult than I had expected, as pretty much everything I came across was scaled for model train sets and thus was much too small. The only place online I could find that sold street lights suitable for 28mm was Ali Ex...

Dark City terrain part 2

I finished another lovely MDF building from Multiverse . It’s the Brownstone Row building 1b (shop with apartments on second floor). It came with an engraved sign reading Baudelaire, but I decided to go in another direction and turn it into an Italian trattoria. I made a simple sign in Word, printed it out, cut out the letters and used that as a template for painting the sign. A little cleanup was needed on some of the letters, but it turned out pretty well I think. I also picked up a couple of cars on Ebay that fit the late 1940’s/early 50’s America setting. These are all 1:43 scale. 1920’s vehicles are pretty easy to find, as are later 1950’s models. 1940’s cars, however, are pretty difficult to come by. At least, if you don’t want to spend much more than a tenner per model. The Ford Pilot technically was made in Britain for the European market, but it looks right for the period. Left: 1948 Tucker ‘Torpedo’ (Solido), right: 1949 Mercury Eight (Motor Max) Left: 1949 Ford Pilot (Matchb...

Dark City terrain part 1

Being a big fan of Batman and the 1990’s Batman The Animated Series (BTAS), I have a decent collection of Heroclix BTAS minis that I have not yet gotten around to using in a game. I’ve never been into the gridded, flat, terrainless boards that Heroclix is played on. But what if I were to replace the grid with a measured movement system and added some buildings and scatter pieces? Challenge accepted! BTAS is set in a cool noir world that is a mix of 1940’s/50’s buildings and cars with modern technology. Starting with the buildings, there are several companies that sell MDF kits, the best known probably being Sarissa Precision and 4Ground . I, however, opted for the Dark City range from Multiverse . It being a Polish company and me living in the EU, this meant no unexpected post-Brexit shipping costs. I do also genuinely think that their buildings - particularly the four Brownstone Row buildings - are the best looking ones out there.  So after eying the Multiverse webstore fo...
